When I first started thinking about diapering, I didn’t expect it to feel so… loaded. Suddenly, something as simple as diapers became part of my broader low-tox journey, and I had to remind myself of the same thing I remind myself with everything else: this doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
Low-tox diapering is really about awareness and choice — not perfection. And like most things in motherhood and wellness, the “best” option is the one that fits your baby, your lifestyle, and your capacity in this season.
Here’s how I approach diapering in a way that feels supportive, realistic, and calm.
Cloth diapers are often the first thing people think of when they hear “low-tox diapering,” and honestly? They’re not as intimidating as they sound. I promise!
My favorite way to find cloth diapers is secondhand – from friends or Facebook Marketplace. Babies outgrow diaper sizes so quickly, and so many cloth diapers are barely used. If the idea of used diapers makes you pause, I totally get it. Personally, I feel comfortable with a thorough wash and a good dose of sunlight. Sunlight is incredibly effective and has always felt like a natural, powerful way to freshen and sanitize.
That said, if secondhand isn’t your thing, buying cloth diapers new is absolutely an option. The key is choosing what feels right for you. Low-tox living shouldn’t feel like pushing past your own boundaries, especially when it comes to your baby and your sense of ease.
If you choose to purchase new, my favorite place to shop for cloth diapers is Green Mountain Diapers. They truly have everything you need and so many options to choose from. We were gifted most of our cloth diapers and picked up any extras from Green Mountain.
Personally, we used prefolds as liners along with the Thirsties Duo Wrap Snap covers and Cloth-Eez Wraps for outer shells. If this all sounds overwhelming, don’t worry — they even have a quiz to help you figure out which setup might work best for your family.
I’ll be honest: once our daughter started eating solids and her poops shifted from infant poops to big-girl poops, we slowly transitioned to disposable diapers. I wish I had the patience and time to continue cloth at that stage, but it just wasn’t aligned with our lifestyle at the time. I have friends who stuck with cloth for the entire diapering journey, and I truly applaud them.
This blog isn’t about shame. It’s about support. I always encourage choosing what works best for you and your family. Which is why I’ve also included other low-tox diapers we’ve tried and loved. There’s no one right way. Just gentle choices, one season at a time.
Cloth isn’t always practical for every family or every day — and that’s okay. Like I’ve shared, I rotated in disposables, and having trusted low-tox options made such a difference for us. Motherhood already asks so much of us, so finding products that feel aligned and convenient helps take one more thing off your mental load.
These are the brands I’ve personally loved and felt good about using:
Kudos diapers are hands down my personal favorite disposable option. What really sets them apart for me is the 100% cotton lining — knowing that the part touching my baby’s skin is real cotton (not plastic) feels incredibly supportive, especially for sensitive little bodies.
These became our go-to during busy weeks, travel days, or anytime I needed something easy but still aligned with my low-tox values. They’re soft, absorbent, and just feel thoughtful. I also noticed fewer red marks and irritation when we used Kudos consistently, which gave me extra peace of mind. For me, they strike that beautiful balance between convenience and conscious living — which is honestly what low-tox is all about.
Bambo is another brand I truly respect. They’re thoughtfully made, super breathable, and feel very gentle on baby skin. I love that they prioritize sustainability while still performing really well, because let’s be real, a clean diaper doesn’t help much if it leaks.
These were a staple for us during longer stretches at home. They feel lightweight yet reliable, and I always appreciated how soft they were straight out of the package. I also love that they make a nighttime diaper (which I didn’t even know was a thing until I had a baby — and wow, they can seriously save you from middle-of-the-night wakeups). They typically start around size 4, which is doable around 6 months or so depending on your baby’s size… we started a little early because mama needed some rest. 😂
If you’re someone who cares deeply about environmental impact and comfort, Bambo is a beautiful option. They feel like one of those quiet, dependable brands that just does things right.
Honest diapers are incredibly easy to grab in-store, and that convenience matters more than we sometimes admit, especially in those early postpartum days when leaving the house already feels like a production.
While they’re a bit more mainstream, I’ve appreciated having Honest as a reliable backup option. When I realized we were running low and didn’t want to wait for shipping, being able to pop into Target and grab a box felt like a lifesaver. They helped make low-tox diapering feel more accessible and less rigid, which I think is such an important part of sustainable wellness.
Sometimes it’s not about being perfect — it’s about having supportive options when life is moving fast.
Joonya is a newer favorite in the low-tox space, and I really love what they’re doing. Their focus on plant-based materials and ultra-minimal ingredients feels refreshing, especially if you’re someone who reads labels and cares about what isn’t included.
What I appreciate most about Joonya is their transparency. Everything feels intentional. From their materials to their messaging, and that resonates deeply with me. These are the kind of diapers I reach for when I’m feeling especially ingredient-conscious and want that extra layer of reassurance. They feel modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed for families who are trying to make gentler choices.
Having options like this makes low-tox diapering feel doable instead of all-or-nothing, which is a big part of sustainable wellness for me. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about choosing what works for your family in each season, while still honoring your values. Small conscious swaps add up, and you’re allowed to move slowly and find your rhythm.
Wipes are another everyday essential — and thankfully, there are several solid low-tox choices that make this part of parenting feel a lot more supportive (and a lot less overwhelming).
Just like with diapers, I’ve learned that having options matters. Different seasons of motherhood call for different levels of convenience, budgeting, and accessibility, and all of that is okay.
Here are the wipes we’ve personally used and loved:
Coterie wipes are hands down the cleanest option I’ve found. They’re ultra-minimal, super soft, and made with mostly purified water and a short list of gentle ingredients. If you’re feeling fancy and ultra ingredient-conscious, these are beautiful.
That said — they are on the pricier side and only available online, so they’re not always the most practical choice for every family or every phase. For us, Coterie felt like a lovely luxury during certain stretches, especially when baby skin felt extra sensitive and I wanted the cleanest possible option. If they fit your budget and lifestyle, they’re truly wonderful. They have three different types each with their own benefits.
WaterWipes are one of those brands I really appreciate for their simplicity. They’re mostly just water with a tiny bit of plant extract, which makes them incredibly gentle — especially for newborn skin or during diaper rash flare-ups.
These were a staple for us because they’re easy to find locally, affordable compared to some premium options, and consistently reliable. I loved knowing I could grab them at almost any store when we were running low. They feel like a great middle ground between ultra-clean and ultra-convenient, which honestly matters so much when you’re tired and just trying to get through the day. I do have to note: the packaging isn’t my favorite. They are smaller and folded in a way that makes it a little harder to use one-handed. Things people don’t warn you about.
Honest wipes are another everyday favorite, especially when accessibility is key. They’re plant-based, gentle, and easy to find in stores — which, let’s be real, makes a huge difference when you don’t want to wait for shipping or manage subscriptions.
These became our go-to “grab it and go” wipes. Are they the absolute cleanest on the market? No. But they’re low-tox, dependable, and helped make clean diapering feel more doable in real life. They are easy to find at stores and I liked the click-seal package that keeps them moist much longer than other packaging. Honest has been such a comforting option for us. It keeps low-tox choices feeling accessible, even in the messy, tired seasons of motherhood.
This is where I always come back to balance.
The “best” wipe isn’t necessarily the cleanest or most expensive. It’s the one you’ll actually use consistently without stress. Low-tox living doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. It’s about choosing what works for your family, in your season, with the energy and resources you have right now.
Small choices add up. And you’re doing beautifully. 🤍
Low-tox diapering isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about making thoughtful choices where you can — whether that’s cloth sometimes, disposables other times, or switching just one product that feels manageable right now.
Your baby doesn’t need you to be perfect. They need you present, supported, and well.
