Hi friends! It’s me, Kate. The holistic hairstylist turned low-tox blogger. I am here to talk about my favorite low-tox products that I use on my curly hair that actually work (and trust me, I’ve tried them all!)
If you have curly hair, you already know that curls have a personality of their own. Some days they behave beautifully, and other days… they do whatever they want. After more than a decade behind the chair as a holistic hairdresser — and someone with naturally wild curls myself — I’ve learned that the right products make all the difference.
For me, choosing low-tox hair products has always been about more than just aesthetics. It’s about supporting both hair health and overall wellness. When products are made with cleaner ingredients and thoughtful formulations, they tend to work with your hair instead of against it.
Over the years, these are the curly hair products I’ve come back to again and again — both in my salon and at home.
A Quiet Reality Worth Being Aware Of
Something I’ve learned over the years as a holistic hairdresser is that the haircare industry hasn’t always treated everyone equally.
Research has shown that products marketed toward communities with curly and textured hair — particularly products marketed to Black women — often contain higher levels of certain synthetic fragrances and chemical ingredients. These patterns have been studied in public health research and have raised important conversations about long-term exposure and environmental health.
For many people with curly hair, these products were some of the only options available for years. That reality makes this conversation bigger than just personal care choices — it’s also about awareness and advocacy.
For me, this is part of why low-tox living matters. It isn’t about perfection or judging anyone’s routines. It’s about slowly building awareness so we can make more informed choices when options become available.
When we support brands that prioritize transparency, safer ingredients, and thoughtful formulations, we help encourage the industry to move in a healthier direction for everyone.
This idea — caring about these bigger systems while also protecting our own energy — is something I explore much more deeply in my guide: Low-Tox Change Without Burnout E-BOOK.
It’s a resource for people who care about wellness and environmental health but don’t want to live in a constant state of urgency or overwhelm.
Because meaningful change doesn’t have to come from pressure.
Sometimes it begins simply with awareness.

While these bigger conversations matter, caring for your own hair doesn’t have to feel complicated or overwhelming. Over the years — both in my salon and at home with my own curls — I’ve found that great curly hair really comes down to a few supportive foundations. When curls are gently cleansed, given the right structure, nourished with moisture, and occasionally treated to deeper care, they tend to thrive. Below is a simple framework I often share with clients that helps curls look and feel their best — using thoughtful low-tox products that support both hair health and overall wellness.
1. A Gentle Cleanser
Healthy curls start with a healthy scalp. But many conventional shampoos use harsh detergents that strip the hair’s natural oils, which can leave curls dry and harder to manage.
Curly hair usually needs cleansing that feels hydrating and supportive rather than squeaky clean.
Two of my favorite low-tox cleansers are:
New Wash by Hairstory
This cleanser is incredibly gentle and nourishing. Instead of traditional detergent-based shampoo, it uses essential oils and plant-based ingredients to cleanse the scalp while keeping the hair hydrated. For me – and many of my curly-haired clients, it’s been a complete game changer. It does not strip your hair of its natural oils, allowing it to keep all the moisture while still feeling clean. It’s honestly, the only cleanser I use on my curls!
Innersense Hydrating Cream Hairbath
Innersense is one of the cleanest brands I’ve worked with in my salon. Their Hydrating Hairbath is especially wonderful for curls because it provides moisture while still leaving the scalp feeling fresh and balanced. For those who want a little suds – this is your best bet! For something a little lighter, you can also try their Pure Harmony Hairbath. It’s extremely gently and lightweight. Great for those who get a little flat with heavier shampoos and conditioners.
A gentle cleanser is truly the foundation of healthy curls.
2. Bounce & Moisture
Once curls are structured, they often need softness and movement. This step helps curls stay hydrated and separated so they don’t clump together, feel heavy or dry CRUNCHY. We want hair to move – even when its worn curly.
These are a few products I often recommend:
Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control
This is a dream product for curly hair. It adds moisture while enhancing curl shape and bounce. I often use it on clients who want definition but also softness.
GM Reverie Milk
Milk is a lightweight leave-in conditioner that nourishes hair without weighing it down. It’s beautiful for detangling and keeping curls hydrated throughout the day.
Hairstory Balm
A little goes a long way with this one. Balm helps smooth frizz and add polish to curls, especially when used on the ends. I love adding this to my curls before I get out of the shower. I squeeze as much water out of my hair as I can, apply a pump or two (depends on how much hair you hair and your texture – so start small and play around from there), then I get out and gently dry my hair with a curly-hair-towel. (My favorite one is from Kitsch).
3. Structure: Defining Your Curl Pattern
Once curls are clean and hydrated, the next step is giving them structure. This is where gels, mousses, and texture sprays come in.
For curls, structure is what helps your natural pattern hold its shape without becoming frizzy or undefined.
My favorites:
Innersense I Create Hold
This gel is one of the best curl-defining products I’ve ever used. It provides flexible hold without that crunchy, stiff feeling many gels leave behind. It helps curls stay defined while still feeling soft and touchable. This gel truly helps my curls looking great for days! Paired with a solid curl creme, all I need its a spritz of water on day three or four, a bit of plopping to redefine my curls and I’m back in business. Looking even better on day four that I was on wash day!
Innersense does make quite a few curl-defining products with varying degrees of structure and hold. So, please explore something stronger if you know your hair needs something a little more robust.
GM Reverie Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist
For those who have looser curls or waves, and want a boost – Mare adds beautiful texture and movement. It’s lightweight, smells amazing, and enhances natural curl patterns in a very effortless way.
When curls have structure, they tend to look more intentional and less chaotic.
4. Deep Moisture
Because of the curl pattern, natural oils don’t always travel easily from the scalp down the hair shaft. Think of a slide at a park — which kid is going to reach the bottom first: the kid on a straight slide, or the kid on a slide that spirals all the way down? The straight slide, right? Our natural oils (which are actually our best conditioner) move through the hair the same way. The curlier or more coiled the hair is, the longer it takes for those oils to reach the ends — if they make it there at all. That’s why curls tend to benefit from occasional deep nourishment.
Adding a hair mask every week or two can make a big difference in the long-term health of curly hair.
Two masks I really love are:
GM Reverie Eros Mask
My favorite mask of all time! This mask is incredibly nourishing while still feeling lightweight. It strengthens the hair and restores softness, which curls really respond well to. And, it smells AMAZING because, everything GM Reverie makes smells luxurious!
Innersense Repair Mask or Hydrating Hair Mask
These masks provide deep hydration while maintaining elasticity and bounce in the curl pattern. I especially love the Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask for moisture and the Repair Mask for strengthening curls that need a little extra support.
Using a nourishing mask occasionally can really help keep curls soft, healthy, and resilient.
My Honest Take on Low-Tox Curly Hair Care
One thing I always tell people is that curly hair doesn’t need to be complicated.
You don’t need a shelf full of products or a rigid routine. In many cases, just a few thoughtful low-tox products can completely change how curls behave.
For me, choosing low-tox hair care has been part of a bigger shift toward overall wellness. It’s about using products that support the body, the scalp, and the environment whenever possible.
And just like everything else in low-tox living, you don’t have to change everything at once.
A few supportive swaps can go a long way.
Your curls deserve care that supports both your hair and your overall wellness.
And remember — like everything in low-tox living, it doesn’t have to happen all at once.
Just start a little bit at a time.
